The New Museum will be an important part of Perth’s cultural precinct, owned, visited and valued by Western Australians and a major attraction for visitors to the State.

Multiplex leads the team as the Managing Contractor for the project, working with renowned international architects HASSELL+OMA.

The construction works include:

• A world class building with exciting visitor experiences;
• Revitalised heritage-listed buildings;
• Redevelopment of the external areas through landscaping in and around the New Museum to promote engagement, connectivity and collaboration; and
• An Energy Thermal Solution for the Perth Cultural Centre.

Multiplex and its design team have delivered a concept design for the new museum project that is bold, distinctive and contemporary, both framing and linking the existing heritage buildings.

It expresses and highlights visitor movement routes through a “band of gold” design element and creates a landmark building that incorporates open public spaces that can be used for day and night events, contributing to the State’s vibrant cultural life.

Designed to be highly permeable, it allows views of activity within the Museum as well as providing spectacular views to the city.

It will include a new main entrance on Museum Street opposite the State Library of WA, a 2,000sqm public courtyard, nearly 7,000 sqm of dynamic and flexible exhibition galleries and a new 1,000 sqm space for touring and temporary exhibitions.

Other spaces include:

• Foyer, function, café and retail spaces;
• An interactive and experiential space where visitors can engage with Museum staff and collections and participate in the research, investigation and preservation work that normally goes on behind-the-scenes;
• Multipurpose spaces for functions and programming; and
• Lifelong-learning spaces for programs, events and activities.

The New Museum for WA is scheduled to open in 2020. It will reflect the extraordinary history, distinctiveness, creativity and diversity of Western Australian people and places, as well as the surrounding region.
