Wheatstone is a Chevron operated natural gas field about 200 kilometres north of Onslow in Western Australia. Its gas fields in the Carnarvon Basin will form the foundation for the Wheatstone Project.
Wheatstone will bring enormous economic benefits to Australia:
  • The project will create about 6,500 direct and indirect jobs at the construction peak.
  • Wheatstone will also create about $17 billion in local content spending over the project’s life.

The Wheatstone gas fields are located about 200km (124 miles) north of Onslow off Western Australia’s Pilbara coast.
In December 2008, Chevron selected a preferred site at Ashburton North - 12 kilometres west of Onslow on the Pilbara coast of Western Australia as the location for the LNG and domestic gas plant.
Chevron selected the Ashburton North site after a 12 month study and extensive community consultation to find the location most suitable from environmental, community, social impact and engineering aspects.
Upstream Scope
  • Wheatstone gas field reservoirs subsea development (200 m) to shallow water platform (80 m)
  • 220 km trunkline to Ashburton North
  • 2000 MMSCFD design capacity
Downstream Scope
  • Greenfield 2 X 4.45 MTPA LNG trains & offplots
  • 200 Tj/d domestic gas plant
  • Chevron has approval to accommodate up to 25 MTPA LNG capacity plus domestic gas plant

In partnership with the Western Australian Chamber of Commerce (CCIWA) and the Industry Capability Network (ICNWA) a recent Wheatstone vendor briefing was held in Perth.

More than 1100 people attended the event - setting a new record for attendance at a Chevron-supplier briefing.

Minister for Commerce; Science & Innovation; and Housing, Bill Marmion, officially opened the milestone event which was also attended by other senior government officials, Joint Venture Participants, representatives of the Shire of Ashburton and the Thalanyji.

Potential suppliers were given an up-date on the project and some of the opportunities it would provide.

To find suppliers located anywhere in Australia please contact ICNWA. ProjectConnect provides suppliers and contractors with an understanding of the Wheatstone Project work scopes that are soon to be tendered or are already out to bid. PDFs attached to the Wheatstone Project packages provide information on the scope of work involved and may assist suppliers and contractors to better position themselves for work at the first tier (full package) or lower tier (components of package) levels.
Companies registered under Wheatstone eNews will be advised on Project progress via the regular Project electronic newsletter.
Wheatstone Project information and work packages on ProjectConnect are maintained by Wheatstone contracts and procurement personnel.
These personnel are able to access the specific package registrations and company profiles to assist in the identification of potential suitable Australian companies for invitation to prequalify.
The first tier registrations on the specific packages are reviewed by Industry Capability Network Western Australia (ICNWA), together with information from other sources of industry capability, in providing advice directly to the Wheatstone Project team on potential Australian suppliers and contractors.
Bidders and successful contractors for Wheatstone Project work packages are also encouraged to utilise ICNWA to obtain similar advice on potential Australian sub contractors and suppliers. ICNWA reviews the components of package registrations (again in conjunction with other sources) in providing that advice.
Upon award of a contract, the name and contact details of the successful contractor are published on ProjectConnect to further facilitate contact with Australian industry. Companies registered on ProjectConnect at the part package level are automatically sent this information about the package for which they have registered. The successful contractor may also be given access to the components of package registrations for their work package.
